To Wake, Perchance to Dream

Although these days it doesn’t seem like I ever get the chance, I’ve always been a major daydreamer.  For as long as I can remember, my ‘me time’ has included a slot for simply laying back and letting my daydreams inspire me.  As it turn out, scheduling daydreaming time is one of the best things that you can do for yourself.  It helps you physically relax, reducing your heart rate and blood pressure, and it incites your psyche.

Here are 4 benefits of lying awake and letting your mind wander:

1.  It helps get you ready for a big event.  If I had a party coming up, I could imagine the food that people would fill their plates with, see the way the house was cleaned and decorated, picture what a gracious host I would be.  Similarly, daydreaming can help you prepare for any big event by visualizing how much of a smash hit you’re going to be.  Planning a wedding?  Having a big job interview?  Just daydream about how wonderfully it will all go, anticipate the process and take the time to prepare.

2.  Daydreaming helps you appreciate your reality.  Sometimes you might dream of yourself jet-setting across Europe with a famous movie star.  But what does that give you?  And really, how wonderful is the life of a celebrity?  And how truly wonderful is your guy?  He smiles politely at your stinky morning breath and treats you like a shining star.  How great is your reality?

3.  Daydreaming helps you get to the bottom of what ails you.  Imagine how you might have handled something a bit better.  Did you have to yell at your son for spilling the milk?  Perhaps you didn’t have to take what your friend said so personally.  She probably didn’t mean it.  Daydreaming helps you learn from your mistakes and come up with a plan for getting ahead.

4.  Daydreaming inspire you.  The next big idea awaits you in your daydream session.  It could be lines of poetry, or a business venture.  Daydreaming connects you with your passions, your unique talents and your chances for success.

So, go ahead, schedule some ‘mind wandering time’.

I wonder, where your daydreams will take you?
